Sassi Di Matera

The Sassi di Matera form a UNESCO property of 1,016 ha with more than a thousand dwellings plus many shops and workshops. The two districts are Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, and Criterion (iii) describes the site as a rock-cut settlement with continuity over more than two millennia.

Getting To Matera From Bari Airport

Bari Airport is 64 km from Matera, about 1 hour by road in free-flow conditions. No Trenitalia station reaches the city, so the rail link is FAL (Ferrovie Appulo Lucane) from Bari Centrale with a change at Altamura, taking about 1 h 45 to 2 h. On Sundays and public holidays FAL runs no trains, only replacement buses.
